Things I Wish I Knew As A White Belt

There are so many things I wish I knew when I first stepped onto those mats. Here is a list, I hope it helps.  1.) Learn to be okay with being uncomfortable, this is where growth happens. Don't give up after the first class. It's okay to make mistakes, its okay to be confused, its okay to feel like you are a fish out of water. If you have no experience grappling, Jiu Jitsu will seem like another world. From the name of the moves, to the pretzel you will feel like you are being tied into, its all a new experience. Enjoy the beginning of this new journey. It is confusing, uncomfortable, but it is wonderful. It will challenge...

Is your Jiu Jitsu for you ?

I have a pretty unique style when it comes to Jiu Jitsu. Regardless of if I have the Gi strapped on or not my style is not traditional. I am a smaller female and I tend to have to be sneaky to get anything on my opponents. My nickname is macaquinha (little monkey) because I tend to come at you fast. It also tends to look like I'm climbing all over people. That there was no way some belt had the magic to make you want to give up. The longer I trained the more I saw it. People getting their blue belts and then they stopped showing up. I started to think maybe this really was a thing. I still thought I'd be immune. I don't consider myself to have a huge ego. I am by far the smallest person at our gym and have been pretty much my entire Jiu Jitsu life. I am...

Kraken Guard- Stopping The Double Under Pass

Whats up guys! I haven't seen anyone else using this guard and I'm sure there's another name for it but I call it the Kraken Guard. You can call it whatever you want. I'm not claiming to have invented this but it is a technique I've been playing with for about a year now. The name isn't going to change it's effectiveness. You can switch between Kraken and Spider Guard pretty effectively. Rapid fire these guards and you'll catch someone off guard.
